Every time we hit Memorial Day weekend that still-teenage part of me wants to scream YES! SUMMER! as I roll the windows down, turn the music up, and rummage around for my favorite lip gloss and sunglasses. Most of the time, we don’t go anywhere that weekend, preferring to avoid the spots that it seems the rest of the state is crowding into. Still, I love the feel of the gate opening on long days of sunshine and warm summer nights, and I’m ready to celebrate it.
Preferably with good food and pretty drinks.
Good thing we know the right people. Kyran and Patrick invited us all the way over across the river to Little Rock to porch-sit and feast on ribs and fresh corn and pico de gallo. Oh, and these.
People, I’ve had sangria before. This was something past sangria. This was sublime. Kyran froze rum, simple syrup and citrus juice in the bottom of mason jars, then took them out of the freezer and added red wine and club soda and FRIENDS. So good.
It was simple and summery and delightful. I had my camera along and snapped a few pics but then put it down and got lost in the conversation. It wasn’t until I looked back through the pictures that I got a fun surprise… We decided to let our kids take a walk out of the neighborhood and up into a nearby shopping area. Elizabeth asked me as she was leaving if she could take my camera along. And then, days later, I got to see a little of summer beginning through her eyes.
Belated Happy Beginning Of Summer. Hope yours is off to a great start!
